About the artist:
Jan Kaláb is one of the most prominent figures on the contemporary Czech and international abstract art scene. He began his career in the 1990s as a pioneer of the Czech graffiti scene under the pseudonyms Cakes or Point, but later transformed his style into the world of galleries and site-specific projects. In his work, he constantly explores the relationship between color, shape and space. Kaláb's works have been presented at exhibitions all over the world, from New York to Miami, London, Paris, and Buenos Aires.
About the work:
The large-format canvas Black Eye from 2016 is an excellent example of the artist's ability to connect painterly abstraction with the organic aesthetics of graffiti. The painting captures a fleeting visual moment when several elliptical shapes merge into one point, creating a striking interplay of colors and value nuances across the entire spectrum. This creates an optically and emotionally impressive composition that evokes a sense of movement and spatial depth in the viewer.
This painting is an example of Kaláb's systematic work with geometry and his fascination with shape as a carrier of meaning and purely aesthetic experience. The work was exhibited in a gallery in New York in 2021, which significantly increases its attractiveness on the domestic and international markets.
Note:
